Studying effectively can be a challenge. When I was growing up 'Studying' was not a subject that was taught alongside English, Math, Science, and Social Studies. Studying for me from grade school through college was reading the text and memorization. Sometimes the results were great and others not so great. However, when my desire to know more about the Word of God and I begin to seek Him out in prayer and reading the Word, I begin to notice a pattern that helped me in studying. Here are some quick tips for studying the Bible.
Tip #1 Why Study?
Know your purpose. Know why you do what you do. Ask yourself, "Why am I studying the bible?" Is it because you were told to read it? or Do you only seek out those feel good scriptures from daily devotions? Knowing the real reason will help to determine whether you will continue on studying.
Tip #2 - Four Steps to Establishing Consistency
There are four steps I used in establihing consistency when I study. Time after time, these four steps proven effective for me. I hope at the least, these four steps will help you recognize and develop your own study method. The four steps are:
Pray
Listen
Seek (search for answers within the scriptures)
Be Patient
Knowing why I study and establishing a consistent study habit, helped me come to a better understanding on how I process and retain information. Lastly, tip #3, is a study pattern that helped me in diving deeper into studying the bible and developing a more intimate relationship with God. These four levels are similiar to the Pardes, a method the Jewish use for studying.
Tip #3 - Four-Levels of Understanding
Literal Translation
Cross-referencing scriptures
Analyze the scripture for hidden meanings
Allow God to reveal His Hidden Mysteries'
